Patient Testimonial - Beth Csukas

37-year-old Beth Csukas, a firefighter from Evansville, Indiana, spent many years helping to save and protect others – friends, family and even strangers. However, on January 16, 2016, it was Beth who found herself fighting for her life.

Beth Csukas at Frazier RehabBeth was traveling to Indianapolis for a hair appointment for her sister’s wedding when she drove over a patch of black ice on I-69. Her vehicle quickly spun out of control, and Beth hit a parked car on the interstate. She suffered broken ribs and swelling in her brain, and spent time on a ventilator in the intensive care unit at an Indianapolis Hospital.

She was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury, and eventually, Beth says that Frazier Rehab Institute would become her miracle that she credits with saving her life.

“The therapists I worked with essentially became family. The program changed and saved my life,” said Beth.
During rehab, Beth participated in Frazier’s Disorders of Consciousness program, known as the EMERGE program, which is designed to provide comprehensive care for patients with severe traumatic brain injury who are at levels of low consciousness. The program not only helped Beth, but she says it changed her life.

“I’m beyond grateful for Frazier Rehab and the EMERGE program. I wouldn’t be who I am today if I didn’t go there.”

Beth is fighting to get back to how she lived before the accident. She is still part of her firefighter family as well, often visiting the fire station to see her friends. She also offers hope to others by visiting other patients suffering from a traumatic brain injury, and letting others know about the EMERGE program, which she credits with saving her life.
