Heart Care

Knowing Heart Attack Warning Signs Can Save Your Life

Heart disease is the number one killer in the United States. And the fact is, many of those deaths could have been prevented if people would have known the heart attack warning signs. While some heart attacks happen suddenly and intensely, most start slowly with mild pain or discomfort.

Here are the common signs of a heart attack:

  • Chest discomfort that lasts more than a few minutes – This can feel like pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.
  • Discomfort in other areas of the upper body – You can feel pain in one or both arms, your neck, back, jaw or stomach.
  • Shortness of breath or other signs – Difficulty breathing, breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, and lightheadedness can all occur with or without chest discomfort.

Chest pain or discomfort is the most common heart attack symptom for women and men. But women are more likely to experience other common symptoms, specifically shortness of breath, nausea, and back or jaw pain.
