Neuropsychological Evaluation

Neuropsychological evaluation takes a comprehensive look at memory and thinking skills, psychological, behavioral, and other factors which can be affected by a brain injury. The process involves meeting with the neuropsychologist to discuss symptoms and medical history and then completing testing designed to address the
patient’s symptoms and concerns. Results and recommendations are provided to the patient and his/her health care providers for diagnostic and treatment planning purposes.

  • For most people, symptoms of a concussion or mild brain injury resolve within a few days and referral for neuropsychological evaluation is not necessary.
  • Other times, symptoms may last longer than expected, the injury may be more complicated, there may be underlying learning or behavioral issues, or the patient may have a history of multiple brain injuries. If this is the case, referral should be made to Neuropsychology Services at Frazier Rehab Institute for a more thorough evaluation.
  • Frazier’s neuropsychologists are experts in brain injury assessment and treatment, and can help with diagnosis, patient and family education, accommodations for return to school or work, and referral to other medical, rehabilitation, or behavioral providers.

In sports medicine, pre- and post-injury testing are commonly used for concussion management because they allow your health care provider to identify problems and track improvement of cognitive symptoms before return to play, school, or work.

  • Baseline testing can be arranged prior to the season through the child’s school or through KentuckyOne Sports Medicine. Our program uses ImPACT computerized testing as well as other valuable tools.
  • In the event of concussion, testing will be repeated at regular intervals as an objective way of tracking recovery. If symptoms persist, referral for neuropsychological evaluation may be indicated.
