Jewish Hospital Shelbyville Hosts 19th Annual Men’s Health Fair on Saturday, June 8
Shelbyville, Ky. (May 20, 2019) — Jewish Hospital Shelbyville will hold its 19th annual Men’s Health Fair on Saturday, June 8, 2019, from 8 to 11 a.m. at the hospital, located at 727 Hospital Drive in Shelbyville.
The annual event is part of the hospital’s ongoing efforts to improve health in the community. A number of local physicians and health organizations will participate in the health fair, offering a variety of free health screenings for men – including the PSA (prostate specific antigen), a screening to detect prostate cancer in men.
Tony Carriss, plant manager with Roll Forming Corporation, leads a group of men and women who help organize the health fair. Carriss reached out to Jewish Hospital Shelbyville leaders following his diagnosis with prostate cancer to help create the screening event, which is still going strong 19 years later.
“Early detection is so important,” said Carriss. “As Father’s Day approaches, these free screenings are a wonderful gift for dads and men of our community. We are so grateful to the many local physicians who give their time on a Saturday morning to join in our effort, especially Dr. Brooks Jackson who has been with us all 19 years!”
This year’s screenings include:
· lab work, including cholesterol, glucose, and the PSA;
· physician exam by urologist;
· stroke, blood pressure, skin cancer, oral health, vision, podiatry, and sleep apnea screenings.
“Taking part in these screenings is quick and easy,” said Annessa Baker, JHS Site Executive and Chief Nursing Officer. “Men can walk in the hospital and take advantage of a number of free screenings, talk with local physicians, and learn if they have health challenges that need to be addressed – and the only thing it costs is time!”
Walk-ins are welcome, however, men are encouraged to call and register for the event in an effort to keep lines short and screenings on schedule. Fasting is required for lab work.
