Animal Assisted Therapy

Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) and Animal Assisted Activity (AAA) at Frazier Rehab Institute is designed to promote physical movement, emotional well-being, cognitive functioning/awareness and social improvement for individuals with disabilities.

A version of the casual "meet and greet", AAT and AAA involve pets visiting people and can be repeated with many different individuals, unlike a therapy program that is tailored to a particular person or medical condition.

With the use of Frazier’s Facility Service Dog, Madison, and a specially trained service professional, AAT focuses on meeting specified goals and objectives for each individual and is provided in a variety of settings, both as a group session or individually.

Since AAT is physician-order, progress is measured, evaluated and documented, but sessions can be spontaneous and last as long or as little as needed. Some goals of AAT include:

  • Physical goals such as improving fine motor skills, wheelchair skills and standing balance.
  • Mental health goals such as increasing verbal interactions between group members, increasing attention skills (i.e., paying attention, staying on task), developing leisure/recreation skills, increasing self-esteem, reducing anxiety and reducing loneliness.
  • Educational goals such as increasing vocabulary.
  • Aiding in long- or short-term memory and improving knowledge of concepts such as size, color, remembering the dog’s name, etc.
  • Motivational goals such as improving willingness to be involved in a group activity, interactions with others and interactions with staff and increasing exercise.

Providing opportunities for motivational, educational, recreational and therapeutic benefits, Animal Assisted Therapy enhances the quality of life for patients treated at Frazier Rehab Institute. For more information about AAT and AAA, please contact us by email.
