KentuckyOne Health Opens Healthy Lifestyle Centers,
New Concept in Prevention and Wellness
Location at Medical Center Jewish Northeast Now Open

Louisville, Ky. (May 21, 2014)—KentuckyOne Health is launching a new concept in prevention and wellness with the opening of the first of three Healthy Lifestyle Centers.  The centers provide medically supervised exercise, nutrition counseling, stress management and more to help people get and stay healthy.

The first Healthy Lifestyle Center is now open at Medical Center Jewish Northeast, part of KentuckyOne Health. The Healthy Lifestyle Center at Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital, also part of KentuckyOne Health, will open in late summer 2014. The opening of the new facilities will be followed by a complete renovation of a downtown Louisville location at 250 E. Liberty Street, a space previously utilized exclusively for cardiac rehabilitation.

This project was made possible by the Jewish Hospital & St. Mary's Foundation, which provided $3 million for capital and startup costs.

The Healthy Lifestyle Centers offer three distinct services. Lifestyle Medicine is a fitness membership program available to anyone who can benefit from exercise and education coordinated by nurses and exercise physiologists. It offers personal health coaching for people coping with diabetes, pain, cancer, obesity, heart disease and more.

Cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation is a service typically covered by insurance for 36 sessions following a qualifying heart or lung condition. The Centers also offer integrative medicine services including massage therapy, meditation, acupuncture, yoga, chronic muscle pain therapy and more.

All of the exercise and weight management programs at the Healthy Lifestyle Centers are grounded in evidence-based medicine. The Healthy Lifestyle Center team works under the supervision of physicians and includes registered nurses, masters-prepared exercise physiologists, a registered dietitian, respiratory therapist and licensed clinical social worker. They serve as health coaches, identifying services that can help the patient live well.

“The programs available at our Healthy Lifestyle Centers offer patients another tool to manage their health and improve their quality of life,” said Paul J. Rogers, M.D., medical director of cardiac rehab for the centers. “As health care continues its move toward a model of preventing illness, we have to equip patients with the support they need to get well and stay well.”

To help people determine the best holistic approach, the Healthy Lifestyle Centers also offer consultations with a board-certified integrative medicine physician, which can be helpful for individuals with chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. Those with chronic pain, arthritis, digestive issues, stress/anxiety, depression, taking multiple medications, insomnia and cancer can also benefit from an integrative medicine consultation.

Consultations are provided by Deborah Ballard, M.D. M.P.H., an integrative internal medicine physician. Dr. Ballard is certified by the American Board of Integrative and Holistic Medicine.

“Our goal is to help patients achieve optimal health and wellness” said Dr. Ballard. “We use the best evidence-based strategies from all healing traditions consistent with the patient’s wishes to achieve that.”

The community is invited to a free health fair and celebration on Saturday, June 14, 2014 from 9 a.m. to noon to mark the opening of the center at Medical Center Jewish Northeast. The day’s activities will include free health screenings and food demos, a farmers market and tours of the new Healthy Lifestyle Center.
