Jewish Hospital Breaks Ground on Hybrid Operating Room

Innovative facility one of the first in state

Louisville, Ky. (November 5, 2013)—Jewish Hospital, part of KentuckyOne Health, will soon be home to an innovative hybrid operating room (OR) and resuscitation center, one of the first of its kind in Kentucky.

The hybrid operating room will create more space for innovative new procedures such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) for patients who are not candidates for open-heart surgery but need heart valve replacement.

The resuscitation center will allow for new, cutting-edge treatments such as the use of hypothermia therapy for some patients in cardiac arrest, a treatment endorsed by the American Heart Association.

“An expansion of the hybrid operating room technology and a dedicated cardiac resuscitation center will give patients access to more unique and specialized services,” said Mark Slaughter, MD, executive director of cardiovascular services for the KentuckyOne Health Louisville market, director of the Division of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University of Louisville.

“The hybrid room will also be a great benefit in treating patients with complex vascular disease, said Stephen Self, MD, Louisville Vascular Specialists, KentuckyOne Health. “Patients with aortic aneurysms and dissections can be treated with minimally invasive stent procedures instead of huge open operations. The advanced imaging system will allow many patients with vascular disease to be treated with catheter based endovascular techniques instead of surgery.”

A hybrid OR features diagnostic and imaging equipment, advanced robotics and operating equipment, allowing cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons to work side by side. The combined facility enables heart care experts to work collaboratively to make informed decisions about patient care, allowing them the opportunity to evaluate procedures in real-time.

Procedures performs in the hybrid OR include diagnostic testing, aortic valve surgery, Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) implants, bypass surgery, mitral valve repair and replacement, trans catheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), stenting, and more.

“Jewish Hospital has performed many firsts in heart care and is a leader in the region in providing cutting edge care for patients,” said Charles Peck, MD, president, Jewish Hospital. “Innovations like the hybrid operating room and resuscitation center allow us to save lives and provide the most comprehensive heart care available.”

Construction on the hybrid OR and resuscitation center began on October 21 and is expected to be complete by the end of February 2014. Funding for the $5 million project was provided by the Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Foundation, also part of KentuckyOne Health. In December 2012, the Foundation announced $18 million in funding for a number of projects at KentuckyOne Health facilities. The hybrid OR and resuscitation center was the largest single project funded.
