Lexington Maternity Education

The Women's Hospital offers educational programs, maternity support, and a commitment to caring for all women and their families seeking Maternity Education classes.  We understand that you are faced with many decisions related to your maternity needs – let us provide you with the right tools and resources.

To ensure enrollment in our classes, please register when you are approximately 20 weeks gestation.  Depending on your circumstances, you may qualify for reduced-fee classes.  Before registering, please call our office at 859.967.2229 for more information.  All classes must be paid at registration.  

Unless offered during a childbirth education or sibling class, hospital tours are on the second Sunday of each month.

Natural Childbirth a 6-week Series: Click Here to Register

Cost: $40 per couple - Light refreshments provided

Our Natural Childbirth 6-week series is a comprehensive course geared toward couples who plan to labor and birth their babies with minimal intervention.  All aspects of labor, delivery and postpartum are discussed.  We highly recommend enrollment when you are 28-30 weeks gestation.  A hospital tour is offered with this class.

Discussion topics include:

  • Normal changes in pregnancy
  • Natural course of labor and birth processes
  • Interventions and informed consent
  • Decreasing risk of complications
  • Comfort measures and relaxation techniques
  • Position changes and birth rehearsal
  • Creating a birth plan/wish list
  • After birth care

 We will briefly discuss pain medications and cesarean deliveries in the event these situations become necessary during your hospital stay.

This program is a more compact version of our 4 and 6-week series covering the same scope of discussion topics ensuring you are just as prepared for labor and delivery.  We highly recommend attending these classes when you are 32-34 weeks gestation.  A hospital tour is offered with this class.

"Just the Facts, Mom!"

Cost: $25 per couple - Light refreshments provided

Lasting only 4 hours, you will receive an abbreviated version of discussion topics covered in our 4 and 6-week series.  We highly recommend attending this class when you are 32-34 weeks gestation.  A hospital tour is offered with this class.


Weekend Childbirth Education Class: Click Here To Register

Our 4-week childbirth education series condensed to an all-day weekend class. We highly recommend attending this class when you are 32-34 weeks gestation.  A hospital tour is offered with this class.

Baby Steps Class: Click Here To Register

Cost: $20 per couple - Light refreshments provided

This one-time class incorporates educational material designed to make you feel more comfortable and secure in your ability to take care of your newborn. A pediatrician will be in attendance as a guest speaker. We recommend attending this class during your third trimester.  Registered grandparents are welcomed to attend.

Discussion topics include:

  • What to expect in the hospital
  • Normal newborn appearances
  • Caring for your newborn
  • Feeding your newborn
  • Bathing techniques for your newborn
  • Cord and circumcision care
  • Hands-on activities-swaddling, diaper changing and holding-using life-sized dolls

Breastfeeding: Click Here To Register

Cost: $20 per couple - Light refreshments provided

Our Breastfeeding classes are taught by International Board Certified Lactation Consultants or Certified Lactation Counselors.  We recommend attending this class during your third trimester.  Spouses are encouraged to attend.  

Prenatal preparation for breastfeeding topics focus on:

  • Advantages of breastfeeding
  • Proper positioning and latch-on
  • Guidelines for adequate breastfeeding
  • How to prevent and resolve discomforts
  • Breast pump options
  • Storage of milk
  • Breastfeeding and returning to work

 

Infant CPR: Click Here To Register

Cost: $20 per couple - Limit of 3 couples per class

This is a one-time class.  Parents will be able to learn basic techniques of Cardiopulmonary
Resuscitation (CPR) and choking for their newborn.  Educational material covers infants from newborn to one-year-old.  We recommend attending this class during your third trimester.  If you have already delivered, please arrange for a babysitter for your little one, we want you to be able to completely benefit from this important and possible life-saving class.  This is not a certification class; no AHA certificate will be given.  Please note: Refunds will NOT be given if you cancel this class with less than two week notice.

Cost: $10 per child - Light refreshments provided 

Parent or guardian must accompany child.  Limited to 5 children per class.  

Recommended for children ages 3 to 6 years old, this is a fun class for big brothers and sisters.  Our goal is to promote a strong family unit as well as relieving some of the anxieties of bringing a new baby into the household.  

Children will be able to:

  • Tour the maternity unit
  • Become familiar with where their mommy and new sibling will be staying while at the hospital
  • Gain hands on experience with holding and diapering a life size doll

 

 

Opiate Recovery and Your Baby: Click Here To Register

COST:  FREE

A class with strong emphasis of support and opiate recovery information.  Parents-to-be will enter a safe environment with discussions of breastfeeding, care of their newborn after delivery and learn of available services and resources.  This class is free to any mom in a recovery program.  Enrollment is encouraged beginning at 23-25 weeks gestation. 

 

 

Tours of the Women’s Hospital - Register Today - Unless offered during class, hospital tours are on the second Sunday of each month at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.
